Blk Bx
“CloTHING(s) as conversation is a design research initiative based out of Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Since the Fall of 2011 their work has been seeking means to revise common assumptions about how we should and can interface with the textile based products around us”.︎
Blk Bx is a publication that documents a cultural probe in the shape of a ‘black box’ during the first phase of the research initiative: this phase looked into investigations, cultural probing and participatory design prompts to understand people's relationship with textiles through critical design. It was distributed to research participants in North America and Europe. Inside, Blk Bx documents numerous object-based prompts, gifts recieved from participants, diverse narratives and communal events.
The systematic design approach for this publication accompanied with technical drawings were in reflection to museum archival catalogues, library receipts and blueprints to demystify the probe and create transparency. The font used was Apercu Pro to maintain consistency with the research initiative’s identity.
